I just installed TimeBox onto my Windows machine, but I can't get the application to run.

This issue has cropped up with TimeBox version 1.2 The issue appears to be fixed in later versions of the application.

If you try to run the application for the first time and it fails, you may need to make a simple edit to a file. In the folder that the application was installed into (by default, this file would be called TimeBox1.2), look for a file called TimeBox1.2.lax. first, BE SURE TO MAKE A BACK-UP COPY OF THIS FILE. Once you've backed up the file, open it in any simple text editor, and look for the line that begins with lax.nl.current.vm It will probably look something like this:

lax.nl.current.vm=C:\\jdk1.1.8\\jre\\bin\\java.exe

Replace the part after the equals (=) sign (i.e. the part that says something like this: C:\\jdk1.1.8\\jre\\bin\\java.exe) with the following:

jre1.3\\bin\\java.exe

Save the file and quit out of the editor. The change should cause the TimeBox application to look for a required, updated piece of software you next try running it.

Does the TimeBox application need to stay running once I've "punched in"?

No. You can launch the TimeBox application, punch-in and, if you desire, quit the application. TimeBox will continue to track your time until you relaunch the application and either switch to another project, or "punch-out" (select "Off-clock").

In fact, you can even shut down your computer after you punch in, then reboot later and punch out. Your time will still be accurately recorded.

Of course, to use such features as the built-in Web server to remotely track your time, your instance of TimeBox must be running.
